SPORT MEDICINE CLINIC
The practice of sport medicine has, over the past decade, developed into an entity unto itself. It has become a well respected discipline in it's own right. A Sport Medicine Physician is a physician who has a family medicine or emergency medicine background. In addition to their basic medical training they have displayed an interest in sport medicine and have completed a 1 or 2 year sport medicine fellowship and successfully completed the requirement for the Diploma in Sport Medicine offered by the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine.
The Sports Medicine care emphasizes the assessment of the musculoskeletal system as well as other components of sport medicine. These components include wellness of the athlete, asthma, the female athlete triad, and any other physical element that may be affecting performance. This diversity in sport medicine allows the Sport Medicine Physician to offer complete care to the athlete. Many active individuals as well as athletes of today feel that they need a physician who is up to date on activity related injuries and is interested in sport performance and getting them back onto the playing field or the activity of choice as fast as is reasonably possible.
Patients are not required to have a referral to come to the Sport Medicine Clinic to see a Sport Medicine Physician. However, the Sport Medicine Physicians would like to encourage Patients and Family Physicians to use the referral process more often.
To make the most of the patients visit to the clinic we would like to encourage Family Physicians to use the referral process. We prefer not to treat patients in isolation of their Family Physician. Family Physicians have often done tests or have pertinent history that would be very helpful to have prior to the Patients visit. When patients are referred we then are able to coordinate results and recommendations with the Family Physician for the appropriate treatment plan. As well the Family Physician receives comprehensive note and results from any further diagnostic testing regarding the assessment and plan. Without the referral many patients undergo repeat testing and evaluations that may have already been done but we do not have the information nor will the Family Physician receive any information regarding the visit.
